Meet Jacob

“People are the currency of life” - Jacob Miller

Husband. Father. Retired police officer. 11 year pastor. 6 year church planter.

Jacob is passionate about training up leaders and men to make a difference in the world.

Searching for biblical manhood.

I grew up in a culture of manhood that had a lot of unhealthy “man” stuff in it.

I wasn’t close to my dad at all, and he didn’t directly invest in me when I was younger.

In my teens and 20’s it was full steam ahead - even though I had no idea where I was going.  I made most of the biggest mistakes of my life during those 10 to 12 years.

One thing that rocked my world was becoming a father to my firstborn son.  I had become a father, but because of my past mistakes and lack of direction in life, I had also become a failure in a much more significant way.

At roughly the same time that my son was born, I graduated the police academy and hit the streets for patrol.  Although I had grown up far from being sheltered from things like drug, alcohol, and abuse -the level of suffering and dysfunction that I experienced in people shook me to my foundations.

This season of life created a perfect storm of doubt.

Doubt in what was real, and doubt in the assumptions I had been living my entire life under - up to that point.  I did not realize it at the time, but God had me in the fire and on the anvil.

Although it took many years, He began to hammer away at me and forge a new man in Christ.  Over the course of the next two decades I continued to become a better father, a better man, and during that time - a better husband through Jesus Christ.

I started out as a follower but over the course of many years I found myself becoming a leader.

I worked in supervisory roles in policing, as well as becoming a pastor and church planter, and leadership academy president.

My goal is to create leaders who know what is right, do what is right, and inspire others to do the same despite all odds or opposition.

Leadership is one of the most powerful forces that God has created.

If we can build leaders, we can make a difference.

Although it took many years, He began to hammer away at me and forge a new man in Christ.

God used my story to lead me here.

As I have grown in my ability to lead over the years, I began to see leadership as a powerful force for good.

Alexander the Great said:  “I do not fear an army of lions led by a sheep, I fear an army of sheep led by a lion.”

There is wisdom in what he said when it comes to winning on the battlefield, and if what he said is in fact true, then we need to start building more lions and challenging them to lead so that WE ALL can start winning more on the battlefield of life.

This is why I created Background Leadership Academy - to teach young people how to build a strong foundation for life, and then teach them how to build on that foundation through leadership.

Through that process, I believe they will make a difference.
